I almost did not watch this film in its entirety. I'm sure had I watched it in 2007 when it came out I would not have found the CGI so tiring, but watching in 2021 I was not impressed. I'm glad I did not turn it off. I found the new take on the story much more compelling than the original, especially having to read it in Old English. This new retelling was much more compelling with greater plot complexity; more in line with Greek myth than Old English boasting. The cyclic nature that both kings find themselves locked into due to their human frailties lends itself to a much more endearing story. In my opinion, far superior to the original. The idea that one should seek out adventure so that songs will be written about it, while one brags about the accomplishment finds little foothold in contemporary thought. Today the ethic seems to be that it is noble to strive against adversity, but it is boorish to brag about ones accomplishments. So yes, a contemporary story framed upon an old and outdated tale. It is definitely worth ones time.

One of my favorite movies. Love Stanley Tucci as Robin Goodfellow and Kevin Kline as bottom is a hoot! There are several great Shakespeare movies, but this is the best. Although the ones by Kenneth Branagh are close to it. I rarely watch a movie twice, yet I have watched this movie many times; certainly an easy access point for those unfamiliar with Shakespeare.

I was greatly annoyed by the casting choices. Rosamund Pike is a terrible cast for Moiraine; not that I have a problem with her acting. The same with Daniel Henney as Lan. I guess it wouldn't matter if you never read the books. It is a very liberal adaptation. They never even go to Barleon (sp), nor do they meet Min. Moiraine is not injured, nor is she healed by a Green Sister in a Reds camp and on and on. Initially the overall acting is pretty poor, but gets better as the actors settle into their parts. Still, its a lot to overcome if you have read the books, but I am looking forward to season 2.
