I almost did not watch this film in its entirety. I'm sure had I watched it in 2007 when it came out I would not have found the CGI so tiring, but watching in 2021 I was not impressed. I'm glad I did not turn it off. I found the new take on the story much more compelling than the original, especially having to read it in Old English. This new retelling was much more compelling with greater plot complexity; more in line with Greek myth than Old English boasting. The cyclic nature that both kings find themselves locked into due to their human frailties lends itself to a much more endearing story. In my opinion, far superior to the original. The idea that one should seek out adventure so that songs will be written about it, while one brags about the accomplishment finds little foothold in contemporary thought. Today the ethic seems to be that it is noble to strive against adversity, but it is boorish to brag about ones accomplishments. So yes, a contemporary story framed upon an old and outdated tale.
It is definitely worth ones time.
