John Steinbeck, the author for this god forsaken book, is an award winning author. The awards he won, however, were not for being good at writing, they were awards for being terrible at writing literature and wasting time on our valuable lives. The only good award to come out of this book is something that will unironically make paint drying on a wall look like a cinematic masterpiece. But this review isn't about stating an objective statement on Steinbeck, it's about his most depressing piece of literature to exists, The Pearl. This story is absolute garbage. It's characters, settings and themes are so tiring to read about and it's worse than an creative writing assignment written by a freshmen who was high from substances and decided to do his homework at 1:25 AM after procrastinating and playing Hypixel Skyblock for the whole day. The plot was so bland and predictable, I can literally give this to a 4 year old and after every page, I can ask her what will happen next and she would be able to predict it accurately. The only likable thing about the story is the ending. Coyotito dies and is released from the hell that is his family, Kino becomes an absolute chad and punches his disgrace of a wife in the face and then throws the object that drove the story's plot forward into the ocean. There is so much to write about the pearl it's unreal but I'm getting tired of talking about The Pearl to write a proper conclusion. But at least I'm not reading it again.
