I must say, this particular volume proved rather enjoyable, even if the preceding few instalments left something to be desired, truth be told. There appears to be a noticeable shift occurring within the series as a whole. For instance, it has become increasingly apparent that Rowley is making fewer and fewer appearances with each successive book. Moreover, the recent entries have adopted a rather more descriptive tone; whereas the earlier works were chiefly concerned with the day-to-day affairs of Greg, the latest tomes seem instead preoccupied with elaborate accounts of his school or Rodrick’s musical endeavours, offering only the occasional glimpse into Greg’s personal doings. I do find myself yearning for a return to the former style, which, in my humble opinion, possessed a certain charm now somewhat diminished.
