I really loved the series, but let me get something straight. The name Kovalenko is mainly Ukrainian, hence the root of the surname (koval (eng. blacksmith / ukr. (коваль). In Russian ‘blacksmith’ is кузнец, not коваль. With this in mind, in the last episode one of the characters says it’s Soviet..what a ridiculous thing to say knowing that Ukraine was under the influence of Russia for many years, even before the Soviet Union where the government was Russian all along, a.k.a the aggressor and the greedy empire that imposed its power and government while killing Ukrainians who spoke Ukrainian and protected the language and the culture we now have. There are lots of words in Russian with Ukrainian roots that Russia has stolen. Ukraine doesn’t want to be associated with Russia in any way by leaning towards democracy, incessantly proving to be a peaceful country, trying to preserve and restore the Ukrainian cultural heritage whilst being at war with Russia. What is killing me most is that while a lot of people are being killed by Russia, the 2024 series with such silly things being said continues to add fuel into the fire by making the stereotypes stronger and stronger. The scriptwriter probably wanted to show disgust towards the Soviet Union (and fair enough) but choosing a Ukrainian surname for that is just wrong on so many levels! Please, do your research better.
