This will be less of a critique about the movie, and more a rebuttal of some of the criticisms I see about the film.
One of the biggest criticisms of the movie I see is that the characters aren't very fleshed out, but they don't need to be. The characters are meant to represent you, or me, or anyone who could have been drafted into such a terrible conflict such as WW2.
"How could a typist be drafted into tank crew during WW2, that is so inaccurate." Well duh! The characters themselves point this out! The point of the typist character, is to put us in the shoes of someone who wanted no part in war, who never expected to see war, who is not trained for war. And to take this person and drag them through the horrible, horrible circumstances of WW2.
You can see how angry the crew is to receive this guy as a crew mate. But deep down, you know that they don't want such an innocent soul to see the horrors of war. But they must corrupt him, to make him strong enough to survive. It is such a beautiful and tragic message that is so lost on these "historically accurate" filmophile nutjobs.
The historical inaccuracies of the movie are irrelevant, because the movie isn't about historical accuracy or necessarily about WWII. It is about War in General!
Another criticism about the movie that I constantly hear, is that the religious undertones are hamfisted into the movie. Well, let me tell you, there is a reason people turn to religion during tough and difficult times. And wartime is no different, there is an old wartime saying "In the trenches, there are no atheists." And that is really hammered home in this film
The backdrop of WWII, and the brotherhood displayed by the characters was used to paint this beautiful religious message of love through wrath and sacrifice expertly. And honestly it's not just an amazing WW2 film, but one of the greatest movies ever made!
P.S. Another thing I'd like to point out, I see a disturbing amount of people seemingly rooting for Nazi Germany in the lower end of the reviews. And it's very telling that I see a lot of German last names in the negative reviews. Just a weird and sort of scary bit of bias I just wanted to point out. Sounds like ya'll need to get right with Jesus yourselves lol ๐. Anyway, this movie is great and should be on everyone's watchlist.
