What I don't understand is why in the 21st century that most every adaptation of Ms. Austen's works, or most literary classics, must be old and stogey!
I thought this version was a funny, romantic, modern drama that was beautifully executed with a diverse cast of talent, all of whom were amazing.
It certainly is not an "Austen purist’s" version of the original novel, but the liberties taken were enjoyable and entertaining. I personally loved and thoroughly enjoyed the breaking of the fourth wall, (a la countless other classic films), finding this to be "inviting" as well as engaging.
It gave the film a playful tone with plenty of humor. Which did not deviate too far from the story being told. There was still plenty of longing, romance, heartache, etc.
Perhaps Anne is showing a little less maturity, however,
she trades this with showing more emotional depth and range, letting the viewer "in". This in turn makes it more relatable to the audience.
I thought Dakota Johnson was marvelous and very lovable in this role. I thought this to be her best performance to date.
The story was told brilliantly, the cinematography was captivating, and the direction was marvelous and inspired.
“Persuasion” happily surprised me. I am looking forward in seeing more adaptations similar
to this one in future cinema. Perhaps it will inspire a more youthful generation to actually pick-up and read the novels on which these movies are based upon.
Side Note:
*I would like to see Dakota opposite Henry-great natural chemistry- there. Or maybe just more Henry, hahaha! *
