Painful to write this review as I have been a Costner groupie since NO WAY OUT.
Three hours of my time I can’t get back.
My sister and I went to an early afternoon screening Day One. Theatre 1/4 full with median age 50. No young people. So happy we didn’t pay full price.
Maybe the middle-agers are upset at Costner for leaving Yellowstone for this. 🤷♀️
As soon as we got to the car we both gave it a HARD “C”.
Saving grace was cinematic locations and acting.
Negatives
Slow slow slow start.
Meandering, disjointed characters with NO NAMES and no development. Costner didn’t show up until after the first hour of murder and mayhem at the hand of the Apache to the new settlers in a place “I think” is the name sake - Horizon. That horrific segment was way way too long and gory. Soldiers arrived to help bury the dead. New characters.
Dialog extremely hard to hear and understand. If you wear hearing aids, be prepared.
And the women .. a couple had perfect hairdos, painted eyebrows and makeup and perfectly clean attire. Not possible on a wagon train.
At the end you’re given two minutes of “trailer-like” snippets … I presume to whet your appetite for Chapter II.
Chapter I very disappointing and in no way what you would expect from Costner after Dances With Wolves and Open Range — ‼️ which this ain’t ‼️
His passion for the Old West and Indian history in making this soon-to-be-4-part-saga cost him more than his fortunes and time. His Yellowstone legacy is marred forever.
We will go to Chapter II in August if for nothing else closure of the characters introduced today.
