A lot of things could have been better, although I admire the actors for doing a good job immersing themselves in their roles. The "survival" scenes, however, weren't realistic at all. They kept very good, well-shaven faces throughout most of their time stranded at sea. Their hair never grew long despite being stranded for weeks... They just looked too CLEAN. Watanabe was also depicted a bit off character compared to the one in Hillenbrand's book. In short, so many things in the film were probably made more presentable to appeal to a wider viewership, but it missed the brutal and important points that made Louie Zamperini's story memorable in the first place.
