The movie is great. I have so many memories growing up with this movie and I still watch it to this day. Don’t expect too many horror/jump scares, at the end of the day it’s still a Disney movie for kids. The SFX on the zombies though is great and there isn’t too much CGI throughout. No, it doesn’t exactly resemble the ride but it’s still a good movie by itself. Eddie Murphy does a wonderful job and he had a couple of whitty lines that made me chuckle. There are some things that aren’t quite explained, but I have a few theories that just make sense to me [spoilers ahead].
One of the biggest questions is why did Ramsey kill Elizabeth, the movie gave a brief explanation about how Mr. Gracey was “throwing it all away for love” but I don’t think it makes much sense. I think he was racist, and couldn’t stand to see Mr. Gracey marry an AA woman (who could maybe inherit some money and the house?). Mr. Gracey at one point hints at it when he’s talking to Sarah, he said “they were from different worlds and couldn’t be together” talking about him and Elizabeth. Since they were together during what seems like the 1800’s, I think he’s referring to their race. I would assume topics like racism might be too heavy for Disney which is why they didn’t really mention it. Again, this is just my theory but it makes sense to me, and also explains why Ramsey doesn’t like Jim almost right off the bat.
Another theory I have is that the black crypt that held the key to the trunk, was actually Ramsey’s. Why else would there be a skeleton that held a key with access to the original letter from Elizabeth? The only thing that doesn’t make sense is the skeleton has shoulder length brown hair, so idk about that.
There’s only two things that don’t really make a lot of sense to me. The first is how the hell did Madame Leota get outside when Jim was tossed out the Mansion? The second is why is Elizabeth’s spirit an orb when the other spirits in the graveyard can be seen and identified? She says at the end of the movie it’s because “the truth had to be known to set her free” but that seems pretty vague to me and Idk if she’s talking about the appearance of her spirit or just her spirit in general.
Other than that, this is a fan favorite that always gets a watch during Halloween. Definitely worth it I think.
