The people saying this show is scandalous and demoralizing have missed the point, in my opinion. An extreme person comes into this girl’s life, via manipulative means, and pulls her creativity out, which saves her. It begins as a relationship that he dominates and controls, and ends as a relationship she dominates and controls. Did the ladies claiming this is anti-feminist miss that?
I’m getting so tired of the avoidant people in this world wanting everyone else to participate in and help placate that avoidance. Needing to keep reality in the cobwebbed recesses of your psyche is not public responsibility. Women who have endured abuse, especially as children, are often like Jocelyn…yearning for someone to repeat that abuse. Not making a show about it won’t make that fact go away. Jocelyn is entitled to whatever makes her world work, as is any woman who can relate to her story. Back off if your childhood was idyllic and a passive, tender, always-supportive partner is what does it for you. Feminism IS owning one’s neural pathways and indulging OR resetting them. Neither choice is wrong.
