In Unnatural Resources, Mindy Uhrlaub tells a powerful story based on her experiences as a human rights advocate in Democratic Republic of Congo. The novel can at times be difficult to read because of the mistreatment and suffering of families at the cruel hands of the military leaders in the country. The lives of Theresa and her mother Luna, told separately but in the same time frame, and their families and friends are based on the real experiences of these people. They are a composite of Mindy’s research and conversations with the people she encountered while living in the Congo. I applaud her for her writing of the story and encourage people who want their eyes opened to the cruelty of humans to read Unnatural Resources. You will also experience the love and determination to overcome hate and evil and the will to survive by the characters in this story.
