Watchman is a haunting extension of well-known characters, with some phrases echoing those in the more polished Mockingbird. Watchman is a darker exploration of the issues plaguing poor, rural Southern towns that dispels much of the hope in intelligent, righteous adults expressed by the precursor/sequel. Scout is just as much of a helpless outsider in her adulthood and teenage years as she was as a six-year old, and we are moved to feel her pain and disillusionment in the end. This novel will make you cherish TKAM more even as you resent its futility. At the same time, I'm in denial; it feels like an alternate reality.
