This movie was almost good. I love the original movie even though it’s goofy and I am a HUGE fan of the games. This movie claimed to be 4K but it’s the visuals themselves that were lacking, the costume design was good, but ALL the edges were unclean on the costumes and looked really rough, no digital editing went into blending their costumes to be characters or the world they created. The special effects were cool, but visually far outdated, it felt again they didn’t blend their effects into the world enough all of them look like mid 2000’s animations, and look like they need a layer or two to bring them to the quality needed to make the powers look like part of the film and not shot on a phone. And lastly, the writing. Oh my, what a blunder, this movie was very rushed and though the back stories are correct the movie pacing was too fast. I know they plan on making multiple movies, they could have spent more time going in depth with these character through a couple parts of the films and less crammed all into one film. If I read my sources correctly 5 movies? And all the main character origins are crammed into one? That’s rough, too hard a challenge with so many characters and only 1 hour and 50 minutes. The NEW character was the biggest flaw of the movie. The characters powers aren’t understood, or communicated well, I understand the origin of the power. Unless they really bring light to what his powers do in the 2nd film this is going to be a handicap to the story the whole venture.
Last negative thought is this; Mortal Kombat is of course the tournament, but a fatal flaw in the writing caused the viewers to think they might actually see tournament footage in this film with how much characters mention how close the tournament is, it left the feeling of being let down when the film ends and we don’t even hear them about them traveling to it,
Now that all the negative notes are out of the way, this movie did a fantastic job in casting all the actors and actresses, they played their characters to a tee, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better cast than the group that was brought in, each individual understood as well as seems like they enjoyed playing their roles.
If we do get the sequels to this series, I hope they take a more serious and thought out approach to merging the writing and visuals to a level that film studios should be putting out in 2021 and not 2006, because as a big fan of this series I’d love to see their efforts live up to their advertising. It’s a very Rich world of characters and abilities with so much structure to the story already in the games as references. Seeing that world come to life in a modern life could absolutely be a knock out of the park.
