I bought this game because I remember loving the gameplay and storyline of Super Paper Mario Wii as a child and wanting to relive the experience on the Switch. I had it pre-ordered many weeks in advance. Unfortunately, I gotta say this game is incredibly different to my previous experiences. I won't say it's bad, it's just very slow in my opinion. It's a shame it has less explorer opportunities like Odyssey does (the save checkpoints and order of play are very pre-delineated). None of the speeches are skippable, you can't run (at least I haven't figured out how to yet) so it's EVEN slower than Animal Crossing is...I also don't think it's necessary nowadays to have save checkpoints on the map rather than in settings (we're busy people come on Nintendo)
One thing I'm seriously bummed about is that I loved swapping from 2D to 3D play on the Wii game to discover cool new items/pathways. This is not available in this game. Origami King seems to have the "paper" aspect as nothing more than a plotline (the whole game could've been the same as a normal Mario game). The weird 1000-fold arms thing is just gimmicky, it doesn't add to the plotline or make things any more interesting.
I like the mini-plot of saving Toads, it's cute and what I expected. But they're easy to find. The game isn't rewarding you for creativity like in Odyssey.
It's not a bad Mario game, just unfortunately not what I was expecting. I like the thinking aspect of the ring battles but they get tiring quick as they haven't changed at all (so far). It's definitely more suited for children (but saying that, the opening cutscenes and music creeped me, a grown adult, out). Won't resell but can already tell I probably won't finish this one.
