For the time, a great game. It looks a bit old school 20 years on. C&C fans everywhere will appreciate the new twist on Command and Conquer with a FPS. The player controls Havoc, an elite GDI Commando who is given various missions deep in NOD territiory. The mission? Blow up or shoot anything and everything with a NOD Scorpion logo, even if it is attached to a human or covered in armour (yes, that's right--you blow up tanks with missile launchers!). This makes the game fun.
With that said, I am currently stuck fighting against a relentless NOD attack that keep coming like zombies with low ammo and even lower health. The game is set to HARD, and this does not happen on any easier difficulty. The trick is finding the officers who call in reinforcements and killing them first. Easier said than done though.
I also like the pickup system. NOD soldiers drop shields, health and weapons, making for an unpredictable play-through every time and giving a critical health situation a solution.
That brings me to the HUD. This is very easy to get used to. In the bottom left corner is Havoc's shield level and health which are beside the radar scope showing enemies and friendlies and their relative location. The bottom right corner is the ammo counter showing how much ammo your gun has left. Make sure this number is greater than 0 and you can keep on dropping Kane's followers. The top of the screen contains the weapons selector, which allows you to switch weapons with a key press on any number, each corresponding to a type of weapon. Pressing the number multiple times cycles through weapons of each type. Unfortunately, the weapon selection is C&C Renegade's only weak point. They are called things like, "Machine Gun", "Chain Gun", "Missile Launcher", etc, so the weapons are not in abundance, but they are functional and drop NOD soldiers easily. All enemies and friendlies are highlighted by a box with a health bar below them. Make this health bar deplete, and no more enemy.
Anyway, I would give Renegade 8/10. A great game, with some limitations.
