Concept was good, Ranbir's acting and presence is great. But the writing is horrible, except for the interactions between Ranbir's family members.
All the romantic scenes are highly cringey. Uncomfortable to sit through. When Shraddha has to deliver her flirty lines, it looks like she's in pain. Her bff is turned into a villain for no reason, her husband who is Ranbir's bff constantly complains about marrying her. It's sick to see these WhatsApp uncle jokes being promoted as humor in a supposedly 'modern' movie.
The writing of the women in TJMM is so, so obviously written by a man who's not around women and does not take the time to get to know them deeply. Women are just concepts to Luv Ranjan, he fits them into rigid tropes.
Shraddha is the 'cool girl' from Gone Girl, absolute 'perfection' in every way and suddenly gets obsessed with Ranbir for no good reason. In few weeks, they're ready to marry, and she's expected to give up everything. Won't spoil the ending, but it's a utopian one that seemingly makes space for Shraddha and her desires as a career woman, but would never actually happen if a woman's forced to live in a joint family in India.
If this movie's true concept was explored with nuance instead of forcing comedy down our throats, it could've been an amazing drama. Ranbir's family stole the show, the film didn't even need a love story.
