The initial premise of the novel sidesteps into an updated version of ‘American woman escapes to a foreign country to rediscover herself’. This time it is trendy (and reportedly cheaper) Berlin, Germany. There is some good writing here, along with a lot of navel-gazing. In all cases—the one thing you can’t escape is, yourself.
