This cartoon may seem childish on the surface but in reality it is a deep dive into Simon Petrikov and his struggles after being freed from insanity. The story is very emotional and well paced which makes it a very good watch especially for people who can relate to Simon’s past either with his lover Betty or his mental illness as the ice king. This cartoon is less about a spinoff of adventure time with female Finn and more about maturity and learning to love and yet let go of someone wether it’s a friend or a partner. I am very thankful that HBO max is experimenting with cartoons because unlike other streaming services HBO max puts thought and care into their creation and lives up to any expectation someone could have. It is obvious that HBO max believed in adventure time and because of that reason the creators researched adventure time a lot so people who like adventure time and have been watching it for a long time can think back to moments recalled in episodes and pick up on easter eggs and people who are new to adventure time can still put some puzzle pieces together and have fun watching the show. I am so grateful that HBO max has lived up to the nostalgia and in my opinion made something better out of adventure time. If you liked Fionna and cake because you like adventure time then I suggest you also watch Distant Lands since it is a great yet short watch (the only nitpick I have is the fact that the last episode was about peppermint butler and not Finn in the afterlife, for some reason that is the second last episode so the episodes go from an emotional ending for Finn and Jake to baby peppermint butler doing tomfoolery but the episodes were still very good).
