It's interesting that so many missed the mark with this movie. True - it isn't filled with high adventure, violence, sex. It is a very authentic movie about people taking the high road in their lives - DeNiro and Hathaway were amazing in this movie. Personally, I thought this movie portrayed what I believe is possible in life. And often life does happen the way the movie portrayed it. It was a well-written piece about people with authenticity and a strong desire to be "real". Because the script and the acting were superb, I found myself immersed in this movie.
I loved that DeNiro's character - who was a recent widower - went back to work after retirement and wanted to be in a helper role to the other employees, including Anne Hathaway's character. He had been an executive before retirement and had a lot to give his employer as well as the younger employees.
I saw this movie a number of times before it left the theaters. The last time I saw it, I went with a long time friend - a former bank president - who had midstage Alzheimer's. I knew this man would love this movie. When we arrived, the customers already in the theater were having a pre-party. One man had gone to this movie 20 times. The others were standing up and having animated conversation with the other movie-goers. Everyone agreed this movie is a special gem.
For my friend with Alzheimer's, the movie held his attention the entire time. His habit was...if something didn't interest him, it was common that he would just get up and walk out, without me. That had happened quite a bit with other activities we attended. But he stayed til the very end. A few weeks later, he and his wife attended it and she loved it, too.
