I am fascinated by this story and how real life evil will be defeated or will overcome good. Sad, chilling and intriguing.
Penny Dreadful is about the blurred lines between good and evil and how those with even a shred of good constantly resist the strong hold of evil. City of Angels incorporates demons and Santa Muerta into historically based fictional evils. The roots of racism against Mexican/Chicano peoples, classism, televangelism, antisemitism, homosexuality, feminism, and American/German Nazism are all intertwined and attributed to influences of satanic evil and innate good. Natalie Dormer does an outstanding job playing multiple shades of .......spoilers! But she is amazing. All of the other actors do outstanding as well, only applauding that she plays multiple sophisticated characters very well. The previous review says the characters and story aren't true to Mexican culture. I think that infusing true historical evils into the show does risk getting some things a little wrong, but the essence isn't wrong. Believers know the devil comes in many forms. We may know a 100% Spanish lesbian would never be a believable Chicano leader......but remember, she is the devil in the flesh. Santa Muerta isn't granting wishes......... But she's devastated with how easily man turns to evil. She's too sad and in despare to grant any wishes, as explained in episode 1. So, although the characters aren't exactly true to real world culture, they are fictionally influenced by the evils of the world. The show is literally about the little devil on the shoulder whispering, versus your inner goodness. The shoulder angel is too overcome with grief to offer real time counter attack. So, one must rely on what good they have inside you constantly resist the devil all around, and welcomed by most. It's truly interesting and I hope the ending satisfies the built up intrigue.
