Surely the purpose of television period drama is to transport the viewer back in time by accurately reproducing the characters scenary and social attitudes of that time. If you don't accurately create those circumstances then the credibility of the drama is ruined.
You cannot randomly insert characters into a Dickens novel that are totally unrealistic for the period. You have endeavoured to apply social behaviour that never occurred in the original novel rendering the plot totally unbelievable. This novel has had some eighteen adaptations and it seems the BBC is becoming lazy and unimaginative in re- hashing another. I have yet to meet anyone who is persevering with it and most consider it an insult. Persist and I'll cancel my license.
