I was excited to see Descendants: The Rise of Red since I've enjoyed the original trilogy and was looking forward to this fictional world expanding and exploring new characters. However, this movie had more cons than pros for me.
Pros:
- I liked the CGI for Wonderland and found it enjoyable to see in the beginning of the movie.
- The character designs and costumes looked nice, especially for Cinderella and the Queen of Hearts.
- A few songs were enjoyable to listen and watch such as Love Ain't It and Red. Life is Sweeter is kinda good.
- It was kinda entertaining.
Cons:
- Although a couple songs were good, not all of them really caught on to me like previous Descendants songs. Some parts in some songs just didn't sound right to me or overall didn't feel memorable.
- The wig situation. Chloe's wig changes in almost every scene she's in and it made me really annoyed while watching the movie. In one scene she's wearing a shoulder length wig, then the next her wig is down to her waist and has more curls. Bridget also had a wig change in Life is Sweeter but it wasn't as annoying as Chloe's.
- I thought the Auradon kids had normal looking hair, not colored hair. I guess that's not the case for Chloe and Cinderella.
- The parents going to high school together. It just doesn't make sense, especially since all the original disney characters are supposed to live their own story just like how it is portrayed in their movie. It didn't feel right that they changed up Cinderella's story and made the ball "Castlecoming." Also, it didn't feel right that characters like Fairy Godmother and Maleficent were the same age as these characters. I expected them to be portrayed maybe a little bit more older.
- Some characters needed a little more screen time, like young Maleficent, young Hades, young Fairy Godmother, etc.
- I really expected to see Castlecoming and see the prank on Bridget. Speaking of Bridget, I would've liked to see a greater character arc for her and to see her ACTUALLY go through the process of turning from nice to evil. It felt like we got more screen time of Ella than of Bridget.
- The goal was to go back in time and try to avoid Bridget from turning evil. This is achieved. However, with one big change in the past comes many other changes, and it doesn't seem believable at the end of the movie when it's all the same except for the Queen of Hearts actually turning nice.
- Didn't make sense how Uliana and her gang would freeze in place when they touched the book that they needed to prank Bridget. They would've froze with or without Red and Chloe's intervention. And since they would freeze in place and be sent to detention, how would they EVEN DO THE PRANK ON BRIDGET IN THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE???
- The ending was rushed. I was expecting maybe another 20 minutes but the movie ended quick.
I personally think it would've been cool to see Red & Chloe fight Uliana and her gang along with the magic swords and owl for the Sorcerer's Cookbook. It would've been a cooler action scene.
Hopefully, the next Descendants movie might follow up on this story and maybe be better.
