I wanted to like this movie.
I really really did.
TL;DR: the whole movie is random distractions and confusion that's linked with super bright colors, erratic movement, and a candy commercial's worth of dialogue.
I was brought in by the promising reviews, beautiful colors, catchy theme, and animation pieces I had seen on social medias- people talked so highly of Promare. It was hailed as some great thing.
I didn't see any of it, personally.
The movie was hard to see, honestly, constant rapid movements are blindingly difficult to follow with radioactive neon colors and a completely unnecessary shaky camera (it's animated, why is there shaky cam at all). I found myself literally making fun of the movie the entire time because it was just so stupidly over-dramatic. It was fun, if you consider someone pouring active pop rocks on your eyes fun. The fire is so beautiful but also nauseating.
The characters were predictable, but that's not really a bad thing. They were one of the only good things about the movie, but there's really only four or five characters, so they introduced a bunch of side plot characters that never have any real bearing on the story. Heck, one of them is introduced about 60% through the movie as a massive plot point. What the heck is the mouse- why is there a mouse??? The voice actors of many of these characters made me want to mute the whole movie and just read it. It seriously felt like all the annoying side characters from different shows were brought together for their own movie.
The plot is absolutely all over the place. It honestly feels like someone couldn't come with way to keep the flick going so they just slammed a random idea on the table and yelled PLOT TWIST and then rolled with it. Ideas and major character points are brought up over halfway through the movie, that are only hinted or referenced once or twice in the very beginning. There is no climactic buildup whatsoever. The movie just throws a cubic ton of information at you all at once, and there's usually a whole lot of blinding colors and whatever going on at the same time, so it's extremely hard to digest and actually understand what's happening.
The OST is the best part of the movie. Though I do wish they didn't have LYRICS when they were trying to TALK at the same time, it was very distracting listening to two distinctly different voices and trying to read the subtitles at the same time; but that's kind of how it is.
I'll give them props for not shying away at that one scene, and actually letting it be on screen. I give it props it did surprise me and didn't go exactly the way I expected it to, but at the same time, it was utterly confusing the way it DID go.
I am overall extremely disappointed.
I honestly wish I could like the movie, but I can't. What a shame.
