This show was a muddled mess of happenings. I was excited to see what the show had to offer, being native myself, I hoped to see a well thought out plot line dealing with the shortcomings of well rounded characters resulting by growing up on a reservation. Sadly, it was a jumbled mess of half introductions and characters who had no agency. I had no idea what they wanted or why, no idea how they felt about the suicide of a "close" friend. Being that he told one of them he had nowhere to go and was going to wander drunk all night , which she responds with a shrug & bro shake. WTH. I thought what a jerk. Only to have her find him dead by the end, which we already knew by episode one, nothing was revealed, how did any of them feel about it, guilty, they should. It was rife with such problematic character motives and this is the largest issue. What do we know about any of the characters? Nothing, if the writer doesn't care, why should I? Then they continually gave a hook to the intro of the episode, only to not reveal anything. Example: The creature in the woods, was it real, was the dad afraid of it, well no since he took his daughter to hunt there anyway, was the land special? Was that a ghost, the dead friend or a bigfoot, who knows. Then, its shrugged off by the end. I can only imagine how lost a non native would be attempting to watch this show, even if they wanted to support it. Inclusive representation should be important but good story telling is what keeps the people watching. When a native says I love the show, I ask why, all they can say is I like the actors or I like seeing a rez on netflix. This is sad. I want for the show to do well, we need to have such characters for young people to see themselves in, but by the end of episode one If they don't know why they are going to Cali, how am I supposed to support or root against it? If I don't honestly bring up some of the shortcomings of the show, the problems subsist. At least I said it, If we applaud something that's not as good as it could be, nothing changes, when we honestly critique a show it shows that we see how it can improve. I hope the show looks at the narrative honestly and sees where the ball was dropped because it shouldn't be a native only show. If you need to grow up on a rez to understand it, that's a huge problem..
