The combination of science with human drama is the vehicle, and it works. The actual companies and people (i.e. Elon Musk and SpaceX, others) involved today are the experts that give credibility to the Martian background while the characters make it wonderfully relatable and accessible.
And the PHOTOGRAPHY!! Wowser !!
