Some of the negativity is valid but it’s not as terrible as some of these rants are suggesting.
It really does feel like a CW type of show in some ways. The coven ascension chant is cringe, but it has some great action sequences and lightsaber battles.
*Spoilers*
The magic (I don’t know if that word is actually used) referred to in one of the top negative reviews is not new. If you’ve watched Rebels, Clone wars, Ashoka, etc., then you know it’s just a different type of force manipulation. So this coven is just some sort of night sister off-branch or sect.
There is a decent amount of bad writing and character/world building. I agree that Wookie Jedi was a huge let down, and Torbin was unnecessarily powerful and this deserved an explanation, supposedly it was a high level of meditation… but despite this sort of achieving power through inner peace, he somehow gains no wisdom and instead chooses to poison himself? Ridiculous.
They use a lot of played out tropes in this too. The too old to train but does it anyway trope…. That never turns out well, does it? Tied to that, the old padawan turns Sith trope…. Can the voice altering menacing mask trope please die? That was a Darth Vader thing, let it be that. It didn’t work for Kylo Ren and it’s just basically a plot device here to hide the identity of the villain until the big reveal. Then there’s the suddenly powerful without training trope, ugh.
Going along with that, there’s also the random power scaling. Let’s make this new Sith super menacing with weird new abilities that can easily vanquish a team of elite Jedi while wearing a sensory deprivation mask… but then he has trouble with one padawan, etc.
Also, can we not have light saber whips? And maybe less of the one saber turns into two, etc.?
Alright, I guess I’m ranting. The show is meh, it’s entertaining enough, but seems unnecessary. It’s got well choreographed fight scenes and a couple interesting concepts that should’ve been fleshed out and maybe they will be. Overall, it’s basic. A 3 seems appropriate.
