First of all, you can't consent to sex when you have no idea what sex even is. It's very disturbing that beyond the obvious problem of the main character's complacency with her societal abuse, she continues to be lied to and abused by the secondary character, and it's deemed "romantic".
Second of all, it's actually totally fine for writers to give their characters more depth than just one motivating characteristic, which in the case of this show is allowed to be one of the following; desperation to be married, desperation for your child to be married, having a child, having sex with women (in poverty) to avoid getting married, or reading books instead of getting married. This show is frustrating because it shows signs of value, and then the writers simply didn't put in the work to make it so.
