Saw it first 1944 when it came out. Again last night - 2021. Can't remember reaction at age five but sure it stayed my favorite movie for years and years. Don't know how to improve on it. Wonderful film for war time England and America. Clarence Brown remarkable career as director. Hard to believe his directing 'Velvet' and also Garbo's 'Anna Karenina'.

A pearl. dug it out of a stack of old family books. Last year fortunate enough to read 'Knole and the Sackvilles'. Wonderful writing style.

Wharton's years in France certainly pay off in her telling of this story. Enjoyed book very much but rate it not quite up to "Age of Innocence".Which book I would give all five stars. Anything however by Edith Wharton, novel or short story is a treat.
