Entertaining and some characters are good. I think Prince Durin, his wife Disa, and Elrond, make the show worthy to watch.
Is it Tolkien? Not even close.
There is no woke agenda. It’s just bad writing.
I do think the writers fall into the trap that most writers today fall into, the idea that there’s a reason to be evil. Quite the opposite from Tolkien where you need a reason to be good. Evil is natural. And this, like so many other stories today, try to make the villains misunderstood or misguided. No, Sauron was not misguided. He was not trying to heal middle earth. “And into it he poured in his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life.” That’s not a misguided villain. Thats an evil villain.
It misses out on most of the philosophy and the theology Tolkien tried to express in his books. But I think the same can be said about Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Now, does this mean the show is unwatchable? No. When it comes to entertainment, enjoy what you wish. But please don’t watch it and think Tolkien wrote it.
