There are some serious high points(relatability of the characters, comedy, the shenanigans), but it really suffers from a lack of an enjoyable plot and is missing a real dynamic between Robotnik and Sonic. (Oops! Humans spotted me and I lost my portal rings and I drove to San Francisco and found them and final battle with this guy who I only spend maybe 15-20 minutes shared screen time with) I think the movie would have worked better if it didn’t hang around the petty stuff like a bar fight and debates over whether they should make smelling salts for cats(seriously!), and had an appropriately faster moving plot with a fuller sense of conflict and dynamic between Eggman and Sonic. A sense of real peril. Twists and turns in the plot. A bit more drama. A little more into the actual franchise lore. Bigger battles, and more at stake. Times Robotnik gets the upper hand. I dunno, I’d be more thrilled if Eggman were pursuing Sonic and Donut Lord more relentlessly, or if he kidnapped Pretzel Lady, or Donut Lord, or actually captured Sonic and nearly dissected him or something else diabolical, or pulled out a roboticizer. The point is I wanted higher stakes and cooler challenges for the hedgehog, only to see our sassy friend find a clever way out of it. The bar, hotel, and veterinary scenes were entertaining, but they shouldn’t be the focus of the story. We need bigger battles with more thought to them.
