This current mini-series has stripped too many of the important details, both large and small, from Mr. Clavell's successful novel. To understand my criticism of the current series, read the book and/or watch the 1980 mini-series to truly understand that this abysmal version of Shogun has become a poor imitation of the original book.
Many people have commented upon the 1975 original book Shogun, the 1980's mini-series that the book's author James Clavell served as executive producer of the 1980 series. Added to that 1980's production to be filmed on-location entirely in Japan with additional soundstage filming also occurring in Japan at the Toho studio.
James Clavell did many years of research for his book with detailed the descriptions of feudal Japan's Samurai culture, traditions, the political intrigues of that time and the 1975 book Shogun 'was inspired by the life of pilot William Adams who did become an influential hatomoto samurai to the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu'. This current series has at least kept those few points the basis for this very poorly adapted 2024 series.
