Whoever is calling this film a masterpiece and gives glowing reviews of Phoenix as one of the best actors of his generation is the one who should win a best actor award. This thing meandered from scene to scene with zero energy or continuity, depending on CGI battles fill the gaps and keep your interest. Phoenix, as per the usual with just about any of his roles, fails to give his audience anything to be remotely excited, saddened, or passionate about. Maybe that was Napoleon’s style? If it was, then bravo, he nailed it, and I’ll say a prayer for 19th century France tonight. If not, this might’ve been the worst thing I’ve spent $20 on in months. The only redeeming quality here was Kirby’s performance and some gorgeous natural scenery.
