The latest Transformers cartoon after Cyberverse, Earthspark has us refocus on the relationship between humans and Cybertronians - Historically one of the make it or break it aspects of a show. Sometimes we’ll get an amazing human stand-in like Sari from Animated, sometimes we’ll get a decisive stand-in like Kicker Jones from Energon.
Happy to say that the stand-ins are great. Instead of one character, we have an entire family as the stand-in, the Maltos, with varying levels of connection and history with the Cybertronians. They’re all so charming and sweet in their own way Alex Malto is my faveorite due to #PinoyPride and his cute admiration and faith in Bumblebee.
The Transformers, of course, are the Big Draw Fan favorites like Optimus and Megatron are here though they are far and in-between, no doubt to let the newcomers shine and grow on us. I do love how Earthy the Terrans feel, if that’s a word. It allows us to have a robot struggling with more human concepts/aspects and allows Cybertronians to be more wise, settled, and confident.
The animation was something I hesitated to like, I won’t lie. For the humans it still feels weird to see how some look like they’re normal but we see more exagerrated proportions here and there, mainly in Robby and Mo. There’s also Optimus’ weirdly small face but! I’ll take it as the animation - movement, physicality, etc - is so, so good. Cyberverse had an issue of floatiness at times but here? There’s a sense of weight, making fight scenes and other cool moments feel great.
An over-all treat to watch, Earthspark is definitely worth the sit down to binge so get on this while you can!
