Excellent portrayal by Gosling and Williams of a couple struggling with their pasts, their present and their future. Neither in my opinion was the villain, both had baggage they brought to the relationship. I’m not sure Cindy was ever truly in love with Dean and having been raised by an abusive father and with a significant amount of sexual partners before meeting Dean, one might assume she was searching for a real connection. Dean did give her genuine love and a safe landing/support when she found she was pregnant by another man, an abusive boyfriend. So she took the offer. He had never presented himself as a financially ambitious man but that appears to have worn on her as time rolled on. While his love was genuine and he wasn’t physically abusive , he could also be a bit of a bully with his opinions and actions. Hard to say whether they could make it work ultimately or if she ever truly loved him in the first place. They are who they are, this is a very real struggle, well portrayed, multi layered. A worthy watch.
