Honestly, I was the most excited for this game. Every since completing steep, I’ve been looking forward to and hoping for another game of its kind. After playing Riders Republic, I can thoroughly say that I was disappointed. I was so excited about biking being added, and being able to play it in the upgraded console, and the graphics, and the mechanics that I had come to love from steep and did not expect what I got. First off, the controls are the absolute worst controls I have ever used in an extreme sports game. Even using the preset Steep control settings, it took a very long and frustrating time to figure out how to accomplish even the most basic spin maneuvers. The biking feels rushed, and the steering mechanics felt very off. It didn’t have the same seamless feeling that I was hoping for. The other major issue I have with this game is the inability to progress without seeing a ton of people and npcs all over the place. One of the reasons I liked steep so much was it didn’t feel like an overcrowded game even when played online. I could enjoy myself and glide through the beautiful mountains and choose the time of day and the weather and have a really nice solo experience. It feels like this is just gone and has been replaced by the idea of getting EVERYONE to play together at all times. And to get everyone to play together, there is an absolute abundance of things to do and announcements for new events every 5 minutes or so that really take away the joy of exploration and fun. The whole world just feels like one giant packed arcade, one where you don’t have the choice to leave. It feels like all these extras were just shoved down my throat by Ubisoft. Kind of like watchdogs to watchdogs 2: watchdogs 1 seemed like this cool super mysterious antiestablishment stealth game, where with watchdogs 2, the seriousness of everything was gone and replaced by what I saw as a joke. The same is true for Riders Republic. It doesn’t feel like it matters if you accomplish anything in the game. It just feels like this hoaky uppity rediculousness. I have always been a big fan and supporter of Ubisoft, but Riders Republic felt like a massive letdown and I’m disappointed with the way it turned out when it could have been so much better.
