I watched this movie last night- not knowing much about the director- Paul Schrader's work, or having any idea of what the movie was about. I, like many other reviewers, thought it was about poker. I was unaware this was a political damnation . . . AND so it should be. Oscar Isaac is brilliant at saying so much with so few words. As this PTSD character strives for redemption for the atrocities he committed for the US military at Abu Graib, an opportunity to help a former soldier's son all but assures his place in the hereafter.
I dare say that the reviewers who were disappointed that this was not the "entertainment" they expected, probably are too young to realize what this movie was about - - unaware maybe of the atrocities of the Iraqi war or worse DISINTERESTED in knowing the truth of how our military acts. This is an important film, and I hope every American dares to be "uncomfortable" and see it.
