that's why you're here. and that's okay. it's amazing. like way too good.
but i'll spare you the effort of procuring the album (and probably the dirty way at that) just to find out if there more gems just like this one on it.
short answer? nope.
but 80's japanese city pop has its own allure and if you find a way to get into it, there's so much to love about this album.
variety is among the best of the era and for me personally, mariya takeuchi's best. which is saying a lot since it was her first album in 3 years, and the first body of work she ever wrote entirely herself.
i love that vintage pop from the other end of the world is making its rounds nearly 40 years after its time, i mean heck i'm 22 and i'd have absolutely no way of finding out about this masterpiece or the hundreds of others just as special if it weren't for the love these artists are getting from hip-hop producers sampling them (like tasogare by mai yamane on that kid cudi song, pierre is godlike, seriously) and nostalgic kids that wish they were borm like, idk, 50 years ago. the 80's were a cool time to be a kid. my parents tell me that all the time. and it's a really special thing being able to live the nostalgia out to a time that you didn't even exist in. variety by mariya takeuchi. 5 stars for me.
