Genre is escapism, set during WW1. And therein lies the problem; there is no escaping the total misery of that war. What's more, this film makes heroes of the aristocracy, whereas their vanity, incompetence and arrogance caused the death of countless thousands of ordinary people. Having a Duke read Owen's poem was just obscene. It's not that upper classes didn't suffer, it's just that the poems sentiment is 'of all men' and not for those that ruled to lecture when their kind had caused it. Calling the archduke 'Ferdie' as though they're all a great bunch of lads. Just the tone deafness of it all.
