I've read a lot of books by German World War II veterans. This is by far the best. The writer is obviously very well educated. Also must have been a very likable person. He covers everything from the invasion of Poland to Africa to Normandy up to an including his captivity in Russia. His writing is flawless and engaging. A special touch is how he occasionally weaves in the "where are they now" bits about his comrades in arms. How they ended up after the war. He talks about the war from all angles. His friends from before and after the war from France and England.
