The plot (any part including the mob boss) is unrealistic.
The main character is incredibly entitled and selfish, with no redeeming qualities. There’s a fragile illusion of feminism accented by the lesbian relationship, but that’s it. She’s not making moves to overturn the patriarchy, she’s taking advantage of elderly people who have nobody all because she wants to be rich. This chick feels so entitled to do so that she goes after a Russian mob boss. In reality Marla would have “disappeared” or been killed so fast there wouldn’t have been a movie.
The ex Russian mob boss appeared weak and was surrounded by incompetent staff. Actually he seemed to be more concerned by the fact that this woman wasn’t afraid to die as opposed to getting his mother out of her unlawful and unwarranted imprisonment.
This was a dark movie with no justice. They set it up like there’s going to be a payout by basically saying “you’ll be sorry you did this to us” but she never is. In the end gets everything she wants. And I don’t know about you, but if someone snatches my mom out of her house in the middle of the day sells all her stuff and tucks her away in an assisted living facility with no means of contacting anybody, AND I have the means to dole out some street justice— I just don’t know why that person would still be walking.
The only reason why I’ll give it any stars is because it draws attention to the mistreatment of elderly people.
On another unrelated note: I used to rely on Rotten Tomato for their reviews, but I’ve noticed that my opinions haven’t aligned with their scores as of late. I’m mad they have this movie a 79%, but maybe they gave it for the PSA (it certainly couldn’t have been the plot).
