I’m a die-hard Austen fan. I’ve read and reread all her books and know them by heart. That said, this adaptation missed the point of Persuasion. The central theme of this novel is adulthood, more specifically, self-actualization and conviction. Furthermore, Ms. Austen has always been subtle in her writing, and the characters of this specific novel are the epitome of elegance. In this adaptation, Anne Elliot is playful and silly, “a hot mess,” and Captain Wentworth, described as the “most handsome man,” is sloppy and unkempt. I’m not going to list all of their mistakes; that would take too long; I’ll end by applauding the casting Director for having a diverse and dynamic cast which, in my opinion, the only saving grace and the reason for the star ⭐️.
