I see why people would like this, whilst I also see why it doesn't make sense in parts.
I have not watched the original film and I'm basing my opinion purely of Ram Madhvani's rendition of it, I'm disappointed to say the least. He is known for his iconic hostage centered films, the tension and intensity that he builds. This film also has such moments, unfortunately in glimpses.
The movie started very strongly, building Karthik Aryan's character, Pathak, with very little information but just enough to understand him. The over dramatic world of media is established brilliantly with the cinematography, the set and the newsroom aura. However, the merit stops there.
Too many things stop making sense, it almost felt like the makers wanted us to switch off rationality to watch this film. The bugged ear piece, the On-air and Off-Air telecast of other news channels, the blasts, Karthik Aryan being the sole person remaining after it, Mrunal Thakur's perfect eyeliner despite being at a heavily bombed site with fumes all around in the sky.
Only saving grace is Karthik's performance and he shines. This genre is something he really should explore and he comes across as very sincere.
I wish the film explored more ruthlessness of the media, the circus we witness these days. Sadly, the movie gets lost in its own plot, with very little urgency and typical tropes, the sentimental dialogues, giving very little room for the movie to make any sense eventually. We need such films, to educate viewers, that everything you see on TV is not the truth, that drama is not news. Dhamaka had such potential but never fully rises to the challenge.
