First of all - PLEASE IGNORE ALL THE 5 STAR REVIEWS - the people DO NOT know what they’re talking about
Secondly, I understand how exaggerated this review must sound, especially with all the full caps words, but I promise you, it’s completely legit.
Honestly, this film had the potential to be a solid 6.5/10 or 3.5 stars. The cinematography was good- especially the use of analogous colour schemes. The pacing of the film was also good near to the start: it didn’t drag out anything and got straight to the point of the film. Overall, it felt like your typical Hollywood film, the sound and design centred around the main subject - Demi Moore.
About an hour and a half in, was where the film sort of lost its sparkle (no pun intended). It was the point that had the most potential to turn the film into some sort of cathartic drama, where you just smile out of nowhere because you’re genuinely enjoying what you’re watching. However, Fargeat turned it into this “clown act” where the film just stopped flowing. It felt like when you run out of ideas to write in an essay (that’s been pretty decent so far) and so you just bolt on a whole load of waffle instead of accepting that you’ve got nothing else and just rounding it off with a conclusion. Naturally, you could tell that something was going to go wrong, but the whole “monstro elisasue” was actually one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. It COMPLETELY botched the film and dragged it from a solid B- straight to a D- The only reason why I wouldn’t call it a total fail, but rather a massive flop, is because of the start which presented as one of those films where you kind of know what’s going to happen, but you still want to see it all unravel.
Honestly, the message of the film was good. I think that if there was one thing I was genuinely reminded of, it was to love yourself because you were created (in God’s image) as yourself. You were never supposed to be like or look like anyone else.
But the film itself was not good. It felt incredibly isolated and flopped massively at the climax (where you have the chance to really make the film great). I wouldn’t suggest going to the cinema to watch it, you should wait for it to come out elsewhere.
Overall, I give it a 5.3/10. Wouldn’t watch it again.
