I grew up consuming the Nancy Drew novels and playing the PC games. I loved mysteries and I loved Nancy Drew. She was smart, clever, daring, and a person I admired. I wanted to be just like Nancy Drew.
I do NOT want to be this Nancy Drew, the girl who has low expectations, hates the world, and gives up on solving mysteries. I loved how Ned (not Nick) supported Nancy and protected her, while also allowing her to be who she was. I loved how George and Bess were good friends who contributed positive things to solving the cases, as well as having their own unique personalities. I loved Nancy’s relationship with her father and housekeeper and looked to that as how to have a relationship with the adults in my life.
I am tired of this old narrative of negative role models and teens who are so self-absorbed and hate everything. Not everything is sex and angst. How dare you take a beloved character and twist her (and frankly, all of the characters) to suit your narrative. You have done an injustice to Nancy Drew.
