I'm sorry but I thought this movie was god awful. As a fan of most of Nolan's other work (Tenet excluded), I was sorely disappointed.
It felt to me like Nolan has been watching a steady stream of TikTok for the last three years to inspire the pacing of this movie. No scene seems to last more than 5 seconds, and the dialogue felt clipped and rushed. It's as if they filmed this to be a 4.5 hour movie and had to edit it down (poorly) to 3, which was was still too long by the way.
The music/mastering was terrible. There were many stretches where I could barely hear the dialogue because the music was so loud. Also, how about some ebb and flow? Assaulting my ears with cacophonous third rate classical music during boring classroom scenes seems a little much.
Some of the artistic license fell flat. Namely his use of black and white...it's supposed to be Strauss's perspective? Scenes without emotion? IDGAF, it was poorly done either way and distracting.
Furthermore, how about some more impressive visuals displaying the physics in the spirit of Interstellar or something? The abstract imagery of explosions, or sparks flying, or the milky way bending seemed pretty amateur hour to me.
I could go on, but I don't want to give this terrible film any more thought. I'll just say that I think Nolan, like so many others, has lost his way because of success. His films would benefit from having some one directorial push back.
