I have to say immediately that Melissa McCarthy did an outstanding job as Ursula! If, for any other reason, going to see Melissa play the sea witch is definitely worth it! The looks were right on, and her singing was great, and her comic relief was very enjoyable.
Now for the critiques on the rest. Ariel did a good job on the singing. But definitely not as good as Jodi Benson. The new songs in the movie were not really needed. I like how they did go into more detail about Eric‘s past, but it did throw me off that triton’s daughters did not look at all alike. I found it kind of weird and it makes Triton look like a player. Do you know the saying… a sailor has a girl in every port? That is pretty much what the movie was saying lol.
They did some creative licensing when it came to changing certain things in the movie, which I did not like. Where, in the animated film, Eric steers the ship into Ursula to kill her whilst saving Ariel. They pretty much do the reverse in this new film, which I was like, why? They took away the hero aspect from Eric. And even though they took away the wedding on the ship, it was nice to see all the merfolk out to say goodbye to Ariel and Eric as they row to the ship.
Now, as for the other characters, Ariel, did it an OK job with her acting and singing was good. I do think she was a little over her head, showing the emotions when she couldn’t speak. Eric did a good job and you saw more emotion from him. King triton was definitely forgettable. I did like the guy who played Grimsby; he did a very good job. Ariel’s sidekicks were OK but whoever did the voice for Sebastian did not do a very good job. The fisherman who catches Ariel in a net had a better accent for Sebastian.
I would rate this movie at 6.5 to possibly a 7.0. I definitely could’ve waited for it to come on the streaming service.
