I'm not by any means a musician, but Slocumb's lyrical writing (no pun intended) brought me right into Josephine's musical experience of the world and into Bern and Freddy's response to her music as well as to other composers. I was immersed in the explanations of Josephine's notations and what they meant to the music she wanted to hear. It gave me chills.
