I gave it two stars because Alexandre Dumas is a good writer…but I HATED the story. I did not finish it because I just got tired of reading about these three worthless individuals who commit murder (and much much worse), gamble and drink their money away, swindle more from naive women, etc. I think the absolutely only heroic thing they do is in about the first 1/3 of the book, and is only a few chapters long. When D’artagnan gets his revenge on DeWinter…well, I was already sick of the book but at that point I was done. (2 Horrible wrongs do not make a right, sir!) Definitely not what I thought Three Musketeers would be, as Hollywood portrays them as heroes. Artistic license, it seems. I do not recommend.

Short, sweet, simple little story. Mute girl meets a young man who falls in love with her and tries to help her speak. Very sweet and clean little story. I enjoyed it.

I agree with Lucy Franchi. Couldn’t say it better myself. Movie material. Great little story. I think Valancy was living my life…only I have lived it much longer. 😂She is a very relatable character for many, I am sure. I truly enjoyed it; I plan to reread again soon.

Loved this book. My favorite novel bar none. Such a beautiful story. Blew me away. Cried like a baby close to the end. Not sure why this one did not score as one of his most popular/best. I think it far outpaces Great Expectations. My humble opinion, though. I know everyone has different tastes. Love Dickens so much! Amazing genius and artist. He molds his craft beautifully.

I love Dickens and loved this book. Something felt a little different about it at first…Felt a bit subdued, but it took off about 1/3 of the way through and I found it to be true genius storytelling. Master Dickens does it again! Never read anything of his that I didn’t love!

I am unsure why anyone would call this book ‘below standard’ for Dickens. I loved it! I was hooked from chapter two. Yes, the brutality of the french revolution made me cringe a bit, but I think that’s the point. Charles Dickens was a writer of political and social commentary many times. He was aiming to make us be revolted in one chapter and have our hearts brimming in the next. If he can make you feel these things, his novel has touched your soul. He is such a masterful writer. His descriptions made me feel like I was there in the scene, and I was emotionally invested in all the characters, not just in the “heroes”. When does justice become injustice? When do you become the very evil you were fighting? What would you be willing to do for someone you love, and for all that love them? Ahhh… I love this book.
