Return to Monkey Island is special. It is not only a great game on its own, a great update to the franchise, and a love letter to the original games, but it does something that no other Monkey Island has done before it. This game gives the series a sense of closure and finality and it ties every single game together into one whole retroactive vision. It has a sense of theme, story, and genuine pathos, and every character in it serves the story while still remaining just as funny as they were 30 years ago. The new characters and locations also bring a new flavor to the universe that is welcomed, and while the ending doesn't explain every question it leaves the characters in a satisfying place emotionally while still leaving the door open for new adventures.
