As someone with an zero unbiased knowledge of the book, the film is gobsmackingly awful on it's own. The acting is great. Visually ... it's okay? Story and editing ...horribly executed. I'm sure the book as others have voiced, was probably great.. This, was not that. And it will take a shelf with Under the Skin and The Village. Horrible. I found myself forwarding 10 seconds hoping I was skipping all the awful and getting somewhere that had a moment of coherence. Nope.

Eh.... the show had potential. I wanted to like it but honestly, this is one of those series I found myself wishing the bad guys had won because the main characters were scripted so horribly annoying/bitchy. The acting is fantastic. Decent cinematography and it's clear the show had a sizable budget. Visuals are great. That said, the character growth was so studded over the course of perhaps 1/2 episodes it's hard to relate or want to even relate to Ava by the end. The love interest is written super cringe. Dear writers everywhere: not every heroine needs a romeo. I probably won't be watching if there is a season 2.

Story is predictable and generic.. at least the first 30 mins then I turned it off (2nd time I've tried watching it). The product placement was painful and obvious. Felt like I was watching a Transformers film. The Yoohoo bottle was an eye roll. The Trump reference - wow 2018 pop culture effort. Kurt Russell is the only actor who sold me. Acting is subpar from the kids. The Stranger Things clip 30 mins in - another eyeroll. Like, Netflix, we get it, but you're trying too hard.
